Unlimited access to physical surroundings is a contributing factor to injury and drowning. Many people are aware that there are risks present at beaches throughout New Zealand however these risks vary greatly from location to location.
As Surf Lifeguards, we can’t be everywhere all of the time. It is important that we know and understand where the risks are in our environment and provide warnings and restrict access where appropriate. Central to the objective of safer environments is the concept of personal responsibility.
Aquatic Auditing
Surf Life Saving New Zealand is the recognised coastal aquatic safety and rescue authority. As an organisation we have broadened our strategic focus and have recognised that in order to truly prevent drowning and injury in New Zealand, we must look beyond the red and yellow flags.
Aquatic Risk and Safety Assessments have been developed following an unprecedented number of drowning’s in recent years. In review, it has been recognised that many of these deaths were preventable had the responsible authority undertaken a risk management process.
Surf Life Saving New Zealand provides the capacity through the aquatic auditing process for coastal management authorities to take a proactive approach to reducing risk, and therefore liability.
